Internationally Mobile Student Population
Continues to Prioritize STEM Degrees
IN ITS RECENT REPORT on the state of
education around the world, the Organisation
for Economic Co-operation and Development
(OECD) found that, consistent with recent
trends, international higher education students maintain strong interest in the science,
technology, engineering, and math (STEM)
fields. Nearly one-third of those studying in
one of the 35 OECD countries are pursuing a
degree in a STEM-related field.
Fields of study for internationally mobile
higher education students break down as
follows:
n■ Business, administration, and law: 27
percent
n■ Engineering, manufacturing, and construction: 17 percent

n■ Arts and humanities: 14 percent

n■ Social sciences, journalism, and informa-

tion: 12 percent
n■ Natural sciences, mathematics, and statistics: 10 percent
n■ Health and welfare: 9 percent
n■ Information and communication technologies: 6 percent
n■ Education: 3 percent
n■ Services: 2 percent
The report, which uses data provided by
the governments of OECD countries, aims to
provide officials and education policymakers
in OECD countries with a comprehensive
picture of the global state of education.

from international students,
applications to universities in the
United Kingdom (UK) appear to
be on the rebound.
In late 2017, the UK-based
Universities and Colleges
Admissions Service (UCAS)
released statistics from the first
application period for 2018
courses, which ran from early
September through mid-October.
During this period, the number of
applications from both European
Union (EU) and non-EU
international students saw marked
increases over 2016 numbers
from the same period. This is first
time applications from both EU
and non-EU students have grown
since 2015.
According to UCAS, which
processes applications for the
majority of UK universities, the
number of applications from
students in EU countries rose 8
percent, to 6,610, and those from
students outside the European
Union rose by 12 percent, to
12,860.
