Reaching Students
Reinig from Virginia Wesleyan talks of meeting students where
they are, and where they are is on their phones. Putting tweets,
Facebook posts-always with images-and Instagram pictures in
front of them isn't just a way of advertising events or driving eyeballs to websites. It's a way of helping students visualize what their
options may be.
Take Instagram takeovers. Reinig regularly invites students
to "take over" the channel for a period of time to show followers
their experience studying abroad. For followers, the posts can be
enlightening.
"They can put themselves in that person's shoes," she says.
"For example, these are their fellow students doing research on a
tropical island. For some science students, they think 'Oh, I can't
do that.' Then you post a photo of that, and it's cool for them to be
able to say, 'Oh, that could be me.'"
She works with many scholarship students who have a similar
experience. Then she can meet with students and help them find
a way to make the study abroad experience financially viable. The
goal is to get students in the door. Advising can take it from there.

Ditching the Paper Trail
At the University of Vermont in Burlington, meeting students where
they are-online-became a necessity in the early 2010s for the
international office's database. "We had the Lotus Approach database,
which is no longer a supported software," says Kim Howard, the
director of the university's Office of International Education. "We had
to move."
The impending expiration forced the university's hand but it

also offered the opportunity to improve the process for incoming
and outgoing students. "We had hundreds of students over a year
going to four different offices to get papers signed," she says of the
approvals process for studying abroad. "That's craziness! That's not
efficient, but it's where we were."
After an arduous process considering options and vendors,
customizing the system they chose-a beta version of iAbroad-
and rolling out the last part of the portal to students, faculty, and
the administration in 2013, she's seeing results.
"Now paper is more or less eliminated," she says. "We never
would have to call a student to say, 'Have you talked to your academic adviser?'. We can just pull their record and know."
The system works like an electronic checklist, allowing students
to monitor their own progress. They're also able to search through
potential programs by curriculum, giving students an easier way to
find programs that work for their degree. All of this, like recruiting
on social media, caters to how students work. "I think that students
demand a high degree of self-service through tech," Howard says.
For her, though, an upgraded, systematized process provides
reassurance that students are receiving the information they need, be
it about financial aid, transfer credits, or health and safety. "There is
a consistency to the type of information that students are receiving,"
she says. "By the time they walk into an adviser's office, the basics
have been covered and there's a chance to have a more meaningful
conversation rather than 'did you know this, did you know that.'"
The University of Akron is in the process of addressing a
similar concern for international students arriving on campus.
Each year the institution hosts about 1,000 international students
and visiting scholars. To help make in-person orientations and
