Best Practices
Have a long-term plan established for the handling
of technical resources like a website, says Kelly
Kowatch of the University of Michigan. In practice, this means "beginning from the end," and
considering how a tool will remain relevant and
up-to-date-both in content and software-after
the launch.
When accruing data, ask yourself whether the
information is merely interesting or whether it
will help make your program and institution better,
says Christina Trombley of Drake University.
Remember that human resources are a cost when
calculating budgets, says Kim Howard of the
University of Vermont. Developing something inhouse may appear cheaper on paper, but staff time
does not come free.

advising more substantial, Akron has turned to online predeparture orientations to cover the basics of topics like academics,
immigration, and cultural issues.
"Experience has shown when students get to campus for
orientation, they're all excited and they're nervous even though
they're trying to be brave. If you do an orientation on campus you
can watch them fade," says Nicola Kille, the executive director for
international students and scholars at Akron. Giving them the
basics ahead of time in a place where they're comfortable allows
them to arrive with a better understanding, she says.
The program will go live for the fall 2018 class. Working with
several students and workers in multiple departments, a team is
developing it in-house with a series of videos filmed around campus. The orientation will also use a variety of interactive elements
to make it feel like a game, with the ability to level up as students
progress.
As on many campuses, the team's ideas were made possible
because of greater access to new tools. "There was a big explosion
in funding in ed tech and that's driven the prices down and made
it much more possible to make things interactive easily," says
Wendy Lampner, a manager for design and development services
who is helping develop the orientation.
The MOOC movement, she says, increased awareness about
online learning and made it more accepted in higher education
just as the development of technology in other sectors accelerated. "So, while the MOOCs themselves may not continue to be
a thing, I do think it had a huge positive impact on the ed tech
market," she says. "It attracted a lot of startups and entrepreneurs
and in some cases just a lot of competition."

When looking for buy-in, find allies across the
campus, says Howard. She found supporters in
multiple departments who liked the idea of a more
efficient international education approvals system
and she found support from the top for systematizing health and safety information.
Consider your audience when using social media, says Mandy Reinig of Virginia Wesleyan. A
Facebook audience is not the same as a Twitter,
Instagram, or Snapchat audience. Students know
the audiences instinctively.
Ask students what platforms they're using,
says Whitney Morris of East Carolina University.
Students will more likely use the university's tools
if they're on a platform or site they're already
visiting.
Consider how travel will change access to tools,
says Howard. Vermont found that students were
often not bringing their U.S. phones abroad. In
other cases, they deleted apps to free up space
for photos on their phones, making any potential
space-hogging university apps worthless abroad.
When developing social media channels, don't
join everything. Pick a couple channels and fill
them with consistent and engaging content, says
Reinig.
Consider privacy standards when gathering data
and when working with students and social media,
says Reinig. Use your university's policies as a
guide.
