transitions when change comes." Because change affects
human beings and the way they respond or react, he says,
"you will need to focus more on working with human emotions, fears, and motivations rather than processes. How do
your staff see the change? How do they apply themselves to it?
How are your people holding up?"
Part of managing change at the individual level, Petrucci
says, is to recognize when to pull back. She recalls occasions
during 20 years in her office when change was so pronounced
that she had to decide "some of these initiatives are going to
have to wait, just to make sure nobody gets burned out."

Practicing Change
"In some respects, change management is something that
we bring on ourselves," Whitehead says. As an example, he
says his office recognized that it was not serving students
in one of Pitt's schools as well as it could. He reached out to
the school's new associate dean and together they determined that while student demand for study abroad was
strong, curricular options didn't fit well with the needs of
international study. Whitehead and the dean collaborated
to develop some new programming. As a result, he says,
"demand for study abroad has gone through the roof in that
school."

Petrucci practices what she calls "proactive advocacy."
By that she means making sure that her shop has strong
relationships with offices and departments across campus,
and that individuals up and down the institution's hierarchy
have at least a sense of her office's priorities and accomplishments. She works diligently to recruit and sustain allies
for international education among the faculty. "It is important for me that [colleagues] see that we work hard, that we
are transparent in what we do, that we are accessible, and
that we are consistent," she says. The payoff is that having
"established, positive relationships across campus" helps her
office anticipate and manage change.
"Change is a good thing," but it's not enough to just effect
change and then manage it, Appiah-Padi says. Reinforcing
change routinely is essential. Without that, he says, it's easy
to relapse into old processes and behaviors. To keep change
fresh and ongoing, Appiah-Padi's office intentionally monitors change processes on a continual basis through continuous assessment. Following that strategy, he says, helps keep
the focus on a critical question: "What are we doing, and is
it getting us toward where we want to get to?" n
