Are You Getting a Return on Your Investment
in Employee Training?
By Sheila Schulte
NAFSA Deputy Executive Director for Leadership and Professional Development

I

t is said that we retain approximately
10 percent of what we see; 30 percent
to 40 percent of what we see and hear;
and 90 percent of what we see, hear, and
do. And according to a recent article by
Henry Roediger, professor of psychology
at Washington University in St. Louis,
"research shows that, on average, students
forget 70 percent of what we teach within
24 hours of the training experience."
That 70 percent loss leads to several
questions: How do we make learning more
effective and how do we make certain that

learners retain information? And if you're
at the investing end, regardless of whether
you're investing in training for yourself, an
individual staff member, or a large group,

your top-of-mind question is certain to
be: How do I get a return on my investment? Roediger and his two coauthors in
their book, make it stick: The Science of
Successful Learning, demonstrate that what
you do after training-providing a series of
"booster" experiences to make information
stick and dramatically improve long-term
retention of material-is more important
than what you do during training. Learn

to make training stick. Visit www.nafsa.

How Do We Harness Opportunities Outside
the United States to Benefit the United States
and Graduates of U.S. Higher Education?
By Jill Welch
Deputy Executive Director for Public Policy

W

hile the phrase "global competencies" may be well-understood by international educators, there is still work to be
done to translate the postgraduation application of this phrase to
job opportunities and success. The demand for culturally aware
and adept employees will only increase as businesses continue to
expand their global reach. Consider the meaning to U.S. graduates of these statistics from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the
champion of U.S. business:
n■ 95 percent of consumers live outside the United States.
n■ 92 percent of economic growth and development is outside the
United States.
n■ 80 percent of the world's purchasing power is outside the
United States.
For businesses to thrive, they must hire people with the knowledge and understanding, skills, and attitudes needed to operate
effectively in our interconnected social, political, economic, and

cultural systems. The upper rungs of the corporate ladders and
boards have acted on this knowledge for years, but global competencies are also key to unlocking long-term success for today's
U.S. college and university graduates. A global market requires
people who understand the unique wants and needs of the people
in those markets, and we can expect a corresponding expanding
demand for people who have cultural competencies and language
skills to harness those opportunities.
To that end, NAFSA supports the bipartisan Senator Paul
Simon Study Abroad Program Act (S. 601; H.R. 4379) that would
establish a new federal study abroad program to incentivize higher
education institutions to remove the institutional, curricular, and
cultural barriers that prevent students from studying abroad and
gaining the global competencies needed to thrive in the global
economy. Read more at www.nafsa.org/studyabroad and learn
