Working Today for
Tomorrow's Leaders
As NAFSA members and staff gather in Philadelphia for
NAFSA's 2018 Annual Conference & Expo, I'm excited to be
among them for the first time. It's a pleasure to be the new
Editor in Chief of International Educator and an honor to
play a role in how NAFSA communicates with its members.
It's serendipitous that my first issue of IE coincides with the
conference, where I hope to meet many of you and hear
about what you'd like to see in the pages of the magazine.
Huge thanks to Lisa Schock, Martha Hawley-Bertsch,
and Richard Papale for their work in planning and executing this issue. In addition to the regular columns and
departments, the issue is packed with practical ways to cultivate a new generation of student leaders, prepare students
to thrive in the new global economy, and internationalize
your campus based on successful case studies.
The cover story, "Global Citizenship 2.0," explores how
to move from global citizenship to global stewardship, setting students on a path to become globally minded leaders
and catalysts for change.
"Lifelong Learning" argues that higher education has a
critical role to play in expanding access to all students, as
well as continually equipping students with skills to keep up
with rapid technological advances.
Internationalizing campuses is arguably more important
now than ever. "Internationalizing Best Practices" examines
successful efforts at three Simon Award winning schools:
North Carolina State University, University of Tampa, and
Mount Holyoke.
I'm looking forward to building on IE's legacy and
creating issues that reflect the broad spectrum of
NAFSA's mission and members. Please contact me at
elizabethh@nafsa.org and let me know what you'd like to
see covered in IE-we're always looking for new ideas and
fresh perspectives. n
