Achieving Diversity in Our Field
DURING THE ERA OF RACIAL SEGREGATION IN THE UNITED STATES , African American

travelers risked violence or even death if they became lost in the wrong town at night or attempted
to dine in a "whites-only" restaurant. To help them navigate through segregated America with
confidence, Harlem postal worker Victor Hugo Green published The Negro Travelers' Green Book.
and serve our communities better.
I'm not advocating for diversity for its own sake,
which can lead to tokenization and self-congratulatory
thinking. Instead, we are better equipped to uphold our
values as international educators when we can address
critical global issues from multiple perspectives.
How do we get there? Here are five steps we can take
now to cultivate a professional talent pool to help us
achieve more diversity in international education:

Send More Diverse Students Abroad
Education abroad participants feed our professional
pipeline. Advisers, faculty, and administrators should
intentionally recruit, advise, and support a more
diverse group of students who want to study abroad.
The Institute of International Education's annual Open
Doors report is a wake-up call that we are approaching a crisis in the profession if we do not diversify the
demographic of students going abroad.

Known as the Green Book, the guide helped black
travelers find gas stations, hotels or private homes, and
restaurants that would serve them. The Green Book's
stated goal was to "give the Negro traveler information
that will keep him from running into difficulties, embarrassments, and to make his travel more enjoyable."
The Green Book, published from 1936 to 1967, was
popular because it offered practical, often life-saving
advice to African American travelers based on research
and experience. Its essays and reviews provided African
Americans with the ability to explore new places and
satisfy their intellectual curiosity.
The guide is just one example of how a marginalized
group, in this case African Americans, benefitted from
advice from experts who understood their challenges
because of direct experience. It also specifically points
to why we need more diversity of all types in the field of
international education. We are currently missing key
professional voices that can help us expand our outreach

Diversity within the profession of international education is a result of intentional decisions on every level-students, faculty, and staff.
