FOLLOWING WORLD WAR II , a

The act, signed into law August
1, funded a scholarship program
to facilitate international
educational exchange for U.S.
and international students,
teachers, researchers, artists,
scientists, and other scholars.

new spirit of internationalization emerged
among the changing economic, political,
and military alliances across the globe. More
than 25,000 international students came
to study at U.S. colleges and universities
after the war, and the growing number of
staff responsible for advising and serving
them needed professional development
and support. As a result, representatives from
academic institutions, government agencies,
and private organizations combined to form
the National Association of Foreign Student
Advisers (NAFSA).
Though the name has changed, NAFSA's
founding mission is the same today as it was
70 years ago. NAFSA continues to equip
educators to support international students
in myriad ways; promote international
education as a viable way to foster positive
engagement across cultures and countries;
and recognize the role international
education plays in securing global peace,
democracy, and diplomacy.
In the decades since NAFSA's founding,
the values by which it was established in 1948
have been continually affirmed-and are now
more vital than ever.
