Reflecting on the Past to Pursue a
Promising Future

A

S WE GATHER FOR NAFSA'S 2018 ANNUAL CONFERENCE & EXPO

in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, we can reflect on the association's seven decades of
achievement and look ahead to a promising future, despite the turbulent waters that

members are navigating now. This year marks NAFSA's 70th anniversary, and we continue to
celebrate our history and progress in our publications and at our annual conference, saluting our
past, present, and future. In this issue of International Educator, and in the next three issues, we
dedicate the back page of the magazine to anniversary reflections.
With historic Philadelphia as the backdrop for our
conference, we are reminded of the importance of
an active and informed citizenry. Delegates gathered
in this city to sign the foundation documents that
would form the United States: the Declaration of
Independence and the U.S. Constitution in 1776 and
1787, respectively. Yet these delegates were informed
by ideas stemming from many different countries.
Indeed, some signers of the documents were born
abroad or studied outside of what was to become the
United States.
Benjamin Franklin, Philadelphia's famous son and
a signatory to both documents, once said, "An investment in knowledge pays the best interest." Among
the relevant skills acquired through international
education is a willingness to accept differences and
ambiguity, as well as a readiness to explain assumptions to those who may not share them. International
educators help bring bright minds together for the
benefit of all.
In the last 70 years, NAFSA members have helped
build a professional field, foster improved international understanding, and shape a more informed
citizenry. However, members have also had to contend
with the issues of the day to do their jobs. Some issues
are perennial, influenced by world politics and the
fight against xenophobia. For example, in 1952, amid
the Cold War, the NAFSA Newsletter (now known as
NAFSA.news) reported that "new immigration law
will make life harder for international students."1

In 1968, during an era of discourse and dissent, the
NAFSA Newsletter observed that "foreign students
would like to know if they have the same right of free
speech enjoyed by their U.S. classmates."1 In today's
climate, we face many of the same challenges.
As we look ahead to what's next in international
education, we will continue to ride the waves of
change in our field and innovate to meet the needs of
our members. This spring, we are delighted to present
a revamped NAFSA Fellows program in which leading experts will examine specific themes and deliver
insights to our members.
As I reflect on NAFSA's decades of work, it's been
a privilege to walk with so many of you through your
calling to advance the work of our field-and we
welcome a whole new generation as they launch their
careers. At the annual conference, many will be firsttime attendees. Whether at the conference, online, in
the office, or on the road, NAFSA will strive to serve
the profession for decades to come. n
