Rise in Violence Against Education
Institutions and Educators
TWENTY-EIGHT COUNTRIES expe-

rienced at least 20 attacks on education
between 2013 and 2017, according to a recent
report from the Global Coalition to Protect
Education from Attack (GCPEA). Education
Under Attack 2018 profiles all 28 countries, noting that an additional 33 countries
experienced at least one incident of an attack
on education.
An attack on education is defined as "any
threatened or actual use of force against
students, teachers, academics, education
support and transport staff (e.g., janitors,
bus drivers), or education officials, as well as
attacks on education buildings, resources,
material, or facilities (including school
buses). These actions may occur for political,
military, ideological, sectarian, ethnic, or
religious reasons."

The threat isn't isolated to any one region.
While the majority of the countries profiled
are in Africa and the Middle East, Ukraine and
Turkey also faced attacks. Two conflict-torn
African nations were particularly impacted. One
area of the Democratic Republic of the Congo
experienced more than 400 verified attacks, and
at least 46 schools in Central African Republic
were used for military purposes.
Military action is a recurring theme
throughout the report, which says that 29
countries had at least one reported instance
of military use of a school. An additional 17
countries reported incidents of sexual violence
perpetrated by armed parties at, or on the way
to or from, schools or universities.
