I HAVEN'T BEEN AT NAFSA VERY LONG-

Margaret Wiedenhoeft, PhD

just shy of three months-but soon after I walked through
the office doors in downtown Washington, D.C., I learned
that colleges and universities around the United States are
facing a new and changing landscape because of declining
international student enrollments.
In three short months, however, I've realized that
the news isn't all doom and gloom. There are dedicated,
tenacious international educators on campuses across the
country-and globe-who are digging into the whys and
hows of this decline, proactively anticipating its effects,
and implementing creative solutions to benefit both
domestic and international students.
This issue's cover story is told in two parts that together
convey the full story of where international students
are going (and why), and what can be done to successfully draw students to U.S. institutions. One solution is
innovative partnerships and the many forms they take-
all of which are detailed in our third feature, "Building
on Strengths."
The fourth feature, "Weathering the Storm," takes
a look at how intensive English programs around the
United States are faring in the face of declining enrollment, and how many are successfully adapting to a
new reality.
A highlight of putting this issue together was the
opportunity to interview Joyce Banda, the former president-and first female head of state-of Malawi (page
16). Her passion for empowering girls through education
is inspiring.
Speaking of inspiring, I loved meeting many of you
at the NAFSA 2018 Annual Conference & Expo. Your
enthusiasm for the field of international education is
contagious, and I'm glad to be a new addition to the
NAFSA family. n
