Mastering the Details of Compliance
With constantly changing compliance rules and regulations, it is critical
to take advantage of available tools and resources to avoid mistakes.
is essential for international
educators to perform their jobs well. There are several tools to help master the details, rather
than be mastered by them-especially when it comes to regulations and compliance-including
computer software, checklists, external reference materials, and interactions with peers.
THE ABILITY TO MANAGE A BOGGLING ARRAY OF DETAILS

To take full advantage of these tools and strategies,
international educators should have a clear understanding of what falls within the scope of their professional
responsibilities, says Patricia Bello, assistant provost for
international education and global affairs and director of international student and scholar services at
Binghamton University, State University of New York.
These responsibilities can include implementing official
delegations of duties from the U.S. Departments of
Homeland Security and State, federal and state regulations, and institutional expectations.
For many in the field, the job expectations of an
international student and scholar adviser are clearly
delineated in their position description or performance
plan, Bello says. Duties and responsibilities can be
further enhanced by internal training that specifies
institutional policies, resources outlining federal regulations and advising obligations, and resources offered by
professional organizations.
"A mistake or not being up to date with regulatory
changes could truly negatively impact someone's life, by
preventing him or her from getting a position, moving
to the [United States], or causing a student who has
already been in school to have to uproot and leave,"
says Adam Julian, director of international student and
scholar services and outreach at Appalachian State
University in North Carolina.

Staying Sharp
Many international student and scholar advisers express
that it is a constant struggle to keep current in their
analysis for repetitive processes and remain alert in the
intellectual examination of each case before them.
"To avoid making mistakes, don't just cut and paste
from the last time, don't use the old form that may now
be out of date, but instead go straight to the USCIS

[United States Citizenship and Immigration Services] to
download the form," Julian says.
Reading the news is also important, particularly
for regional news that may be applicable to a given
higher education institution (HEI), several international
educators say.
"I can't stress enough how important it is to keep
up with what is happening in the world," says Linda
Yazdani, director of international student services
and programs at Red Rocks Community College in
Lakewood, Colorado. "Our jobs in international education are so affected by what goes on politically and
economically on a global basis."
"It is as important to understand what is not being
stated or is absent in the publication, memo, or update,"
adds Heidi White, director of international student
services and study abroad at Durham Technical
Community College in North Carolina. "Often, the gray
areas are the most important areas to think in detail
about when advising a student, taking an action in
SEVIS, or creating a campus policy or procedure."

Harnessing High-Tech and
Low-Tech Tools
Effectively using technological tools is crucial to
maintaining control over the many day-to-day details,
whether those tools include proprietary software or
readily available programs from trusted vendors.
"We use sunapsis, the Indiana University-originated
SEVIS solution and case management tool," says Jenny
Bowen, associate director of student services at Indiana
University's (IU) Office of International Services.
"Related to the SEVIS registration process, we utilize
sunapsis to create batch SEVIS registration events, tell
us about batch creation problems, and to create enrollment alerts. We are able to use that data to drill down
