Expanding Scope
for an Expanding
Field
AS THE PROFESSIONALIZATION

of the field of international education
steadily grew in the 1960s and '70s,
NAFSA concurrently expanded its
scope and membership. The organization changed its name in 1964 to
the National Association for Foreign
Student Affairs-the second of three
name changes to date-to reflect the
diversifying demographics of its membership. (Originally called the National
Association for Foreign Student
Advisers, NAFSA's third and final name
change would happen in 1990.)
The 1970s saw the normalization
of U.S.-Chinese relations, enabling the
first Chinese students to study in the
United States in 1978. Since then, China
has become the top sending country of
international students to U.S. institutions and a major player in the field of
international education.
Several developments in the relationship between NAFSA and the U.S.
federal government during the 1970s led
to increased funding for study abroad
initiatives, in addition to programs that
advanced foreign student issues. This
financial support further solidified the
importance of covering all aspects of
international education in NAFSA's mission and scope.

the association's role in international
education in the September/October
issue of International Educator.
