International Educator - May/June 2019 - 2

When Inspiration
Strikes

WHETHER IT'S LEARNING HOW to do parts of

your job in new ways, catching up with colleagues, or
renewing your enthusiasm for the work of international
education, we all have our favorite aspects of attending
the NAFSA Annual Conference & Expo.
For me, the best part is that I leave the conference
brimming with ideas for future International Educator
articles. The days spent among NAFSA members and
friends are a wellspring of inspiration for me, and that
is largely due to the expertise and passion each attendee
brings to the conference.
I attended my first NAFSA conference last year in
Philadelphia, where I went to a session about recruiting
in Africa. Luckily, I arrived early, because it was
standing room only. The large turnout indicated that
international educators are hungry for information on
this topic. As I considered it for a potential magazine
article, I realized that student recruitment was the tip of
an interesting, complex iceberg: the growing importance
of the African continent in the field of international
education. This issue's cover story, "Africa's Education
Evolution," comprises a series of articles that explores
several facets of this emergence, and I hope you find it
both informative and useful in your work.
Another large topic with lasting implications is mental
health, which seems to reach every corner of international
education. The rise in mental health issues among
college-aged youth has significant impacts on both
international and domestic students, and "Mental Health:
At Home and Abroad" addresses what international
educators need to know about this growing issue.
Finally, "The Faces of International Education"
spotlights six former international students whose time
studying in the United States set them up for career
success. At a time when some nations' leaders doubt
the value of international students, NAFSA's "Welcome
to Succeed" campaign-and the personal stories of
these students-reminds us of the potential in each
international student on U.S. campuses.
Inspiration will abound at this year's conference
in Washington, D.C., and I'm looking forward to the
conversations, session presentations, and plenary
speakers that will spark ideas for the next year of IE. n
