Connecting the Dots
I PROBABLY SHOULDN'T ADMIT THIS, but I've
been staring at the blinking cursor on a blank Word
document on and off for weeks now. I prefer to write
these letters after the issue has fully taken shape, but
that tendency, combined with a serious case of writer's
block, has made me blow past every deadline I've set
for myself. But with a bit of creative thinking-at least,
that's what I'm telling myself-I've turned my writer's
block into the topic of this note.
Sometimes it is tempting to put off facing challenges
until they are right in front of you because it is hard
work to overcome them-whether you are an editor of
a magazine or a professional in the field of international
education. Recent international student enrollment
numbers indicate a need for charting new paths forward
and reframing approaches. Regardless of the type of
institution, those that are most likely to grow their
enrollments are the ones already doing the hard work of
conceiving different ways to keep students coming.
Intentional creative thinking can fuel this work.
The features in this issue highlight ways institutions are
revising their strategies in the face of challenges, from the
perspective of graduate schools (page 16) and community
colleges (page 24) to branch campuses (page 30).
The need to adapt and innovate permeates
all corners of international education. If you could
use some instruction on how to "break through the
structural fixedness that keeps us tethered to our
comfort zones and blocks us from seeing things in new
ways," turn immediately to page 44. Sometimes what
we need in order to proactively tackle challenges on
our horizon is a slightly different perspective. So take
a break, dig into this issue, and maybe something you
read will spark your next game-changing idea. n
