Next Generation: Myanmar
The British Council's latest installment in its Next Generation
research series centers on Myanmar, where young people
account for a third of the population of the country, according
to government data cited in the report. As Myanmar navigates
a democratic transition and an ongoing peace process, its
youth are experiencing significant change, along with the rest
of the country.
The Next Generation series focuses on young people (aged
18-30) in countries undergoing major changes, examining
how those changes shape young people's hopes and fears for
their country and their views on education, employment, their
place in the world, and more. Based on data from national
surveys, literature reviews, focus group discussions, and
in-depth interviews, the report surveyed more than 2,400
Myanmarese youth.

Key takeaways:
* Overall, young people are optimistic about recent changes and
prospects for their country's future. Seventy-six percent felt that
their lives would improve in the next 5 years, citing increased
opportunities and freedoms as reasons for their optimism.
* Their top concerns are unemployment, crime, drug use, social
media obsession, parental restrictions, and discrimination.
Twenty-one percent had recently experienced religion-based
discrimination, and 19 percent had experienced ethnicity-based
discrimination. Discrimination related to other issues-one's
level of education, job, wealth, and language-was also common.
* Myanmarese youth are strongly engaged: nine out of 10 survey
respondents felt that making contributions to their societies or
communities was important to them.
