A Letter from the Executive Director
t’s summer and the living is… easier?
BuildingsNY had higher attendance this spring and a record number of new exhibitors. I can’t help wondering whether some of the old exhibitors went out of business in the recession, but it is still clear that the newcomers are the “green shoots” of an economic turnaround. Every month this year showed an increase in building permits and housing starts from two years ago, but, of course, nothing like five years ago. Still, we’re moving in the right direction. As I write this neither Greece nor Spain has collapsed, yet, oil prices are dropping and unemployment is declining slightly. Perhaps most interestingly, New York City has benefited extraordinarily from tourist dollars and foreign investment. As the Euro totters, we have become the world’s safety city. As housing markets around the country struggle to recover, domestic capital is attracted here by the fact that we never fell very far and recovered quickly. What could possibly go wrong? European bond defaults could still roil fi nancial markets, raising interest rates and pushing down property values. Mid-East tensions could cause oil to spike again. Structural unemployment could become a problem as robots
replace both domestic and foreign manufacturing jobs and American education lags. Closer to home we have neighborhood after neighborhood being landmarked to slow or halt development and zoning changes to limit retail size on commercial avenues – the worst kind of knee-jerk nimbyism. Prevailing wage legislation is just the tip of the iceberg of anti-business moves we could see under a new mayor in 2013. If one of the likely national or international calamities DAN MARGULIES above doesn’t get us, our local elected officials could do us in. ABO is committed to helping our members weather storms. We’re working on programs to reduce business costs for everything from insurance to electricity and new products being announced soon. Lots of things can go hings wrong, so there is no sense in wasting money on anything.
