President’sMessage Leadership Development Opportunities Through ACCG s county commissioners, we are often faced with making decisions on technical issues about which we lack extensive knowledge. Because the Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG) works closely with elected and appointed officials throughout the state, the association is able to monitor these issues and provide us with timely and useful resources to assist us. ACCG continues to introduce new and innovative opportunities for learning and leadership development. Over the past several years ACCG has produced resources such as educational DVD “tool kits” designed specifically for the technical assistance needs of counties on topics ranging from watershed assessment and management to air quality to preparing for pandemic f lu. In recent months, in fact, ACCG’s pandemic flu DVD has been shared with county government associations across the country during the H1N1 outbreak. We are fortunate ACCG keeps us updated with resources such as these. As we’ve come to realize, the first line of defense against the most dire public emergencies is none other than local government; we cannot get too much information on these critical, technical issues. Leaders must be prepared. To further broaden the reach of leadership development, ACCG has also embraced onsite experiential learning opportunities in the form of Mobile Classroom programs. ACCG has undertaken several of these programs in the last decade, transporting a contingent of elected and appointed officials to a designated region in Georgia to learn about specific challenges ranging from water resource management to rural health care to economic development. The experiential nature of these regional “classroom” events gives us a unique chance to see how a specific organization, jurisdiction or region is successfully handling a problem PRESIDENT continued on page 8 Association County Commissioners of Georgia President JAN TANKERSLEY Bulloch County First Vice President LAMAR PARIS Union County Third Vice President CLINTON PERRY Taylor County Second Vice President MELVIN DAVIS Oconee County Immediate Past President TOM McMICHAEL Houston County A Executive Director JERRY R.
