What isn’t so clear to commercial diving contractors, however, is how much work they’ll get in the Gulf in the coming year. With the federal government’s new ban on deepwater drilling set to last through Nov. 30 and no clear indication of what will follow, diving contractors are having a hard time predicting what business in the Gulf will be like in 2011. “Can I give an accurate forecast? Absolutely not, and the reason is because the information that I get from the field is so varied,” said Bryan Nicholls, the general manager of Neptune Underwater Services. “Some people say (the market) is going to come right back around, and others say they’re not so sure.” Nicholls said all companies that provide offshore services are concerned about possible new government regulations that could make it more costly for drill rig owners to do business in the Gulf. “If you own an aged drilling fleet and all of a sudden somebody slaps a bunch of restrictions on you, then it’s hard to say whether the market is going to allow you to put that fleet to work – at least with the frequency that allows you to generate the revenue necessary to meet the demands of these new regulations,” he said. Nicholls said in the immediate aftermath of the spill and the first drilling moratorium, business actually picked up somewhat. 14 UnderWater NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2010
