“Begin Where the Client Is” Susan Slotkis’s Grange Showroom © melabee m miller Having segued from social services to interior design services over 20 years ago, I kept the same mantra: “begin where the client is.” So, how does one with such a democratic approach to design end up doing luxury design? I was invited by the Grange showroom (now my luxury client!) to create a vignette in the NYDC showroom for Révellion: A Celebration of Winter. A high-end French furniture company renowned for its expertise in traditional cabinetmaking, Grange’s mantra is les muebles de famille: “furniture for the family”—a good fit for my approach to design. My concept of luxury for this family living room in Paris in 2010 was an abundance of warmth, comfort and celebration. How luxurious it is to be with loved ones, sharing champagne and offering gifts in a warm yet chic home filled with sparkle, memories and new beginnings! I chose a color scheme to reflect the wintry season and the warmth of the holiday. The wide-striped walls were painted in Benjamin Moore’s shimmering soft gold and silver to set off the upholstered pieces in gray velvet and golden beige silk. A tableau designed around an exquisite server features a mirror, glass and crystal. A lovely silvery blue snowflake ornament that I found inspired the gown for our gracious hostess. Custom Pillows by Sylvie (a Parisian seamstress) were created out of jeweled Indian silk, gold and blue voile and metallic threaded linen. Quite the indulgence! Add nostalgic photos, gilt pinecones, frosted ornaments, chocolate kisses wrapped in silver foil and—voila! Luxury to be lived in! Special thanks to IP member Benjamin Moore for contributing the paint, and to Rainy Lawrence, Benjamin Moore showroom manager, for creating the “Party Girl Hostess.” Thanks, too, to Baker (part of IP Kohler) at NYDC, for loaning the rug to help bring the space together. The vignette was on display through February at Grange, 200 Lexington Avenue, 2nd floor. Susan J.
