Glendale, California, Police Department Selects Kronos TeleStaff to Automate Officer Scheduling Chesapeake, Virginia, Police Leverage Technology with CrimeView Dashboard Leaders at the Chesapeake, Virginia, Police Department understand the value of leveraging technology as a force multiplier and recently implemented the CrimeView Dashboard in an effort to better serve the community. CrimeView Dashboard is a cloud-based solution that enables the entire agency to access an instant overview of current crime activity in the form of maps, charts, and reports through a web browser. “Chesapeake intends to use CrimeView Dashboard at all levels in the department,” said Police Chief Kelvin Wright. “Be it patrol operations, investigations, or management, we believe that this tool will help make us more efficient and effective in delivering law enforcement services.” CrimeView Dashboard automatically pulls data from multiple, disparate sources and consolidates this information into intuitive and simple visualizations such as density maps, trend charts, and temporal indices. The Omega Group has successfully integrated multiple data sets into Chesapeake’s dashboard application, including dispatch, warrants, arrests, and involvements with persons or vehicles. One example of how this information is being utilized is the crime alerts threshold. A threshold has been set for crime types such as burglary, robbery, and theft from vehicles. If this threshold is exceeded in any precinct, commanding officers are informed and steps are taken to improve performance. “Each precinct commander, sergeant, and officer is now accountable for crime conditions in their respective areas,” said Chief Wright. These measurable results allow for the use of both tactical and strategic models such as roll call and CompStat through the dashboard interface. The CompStat model is based on THE POLICE CHIEF/DECEMBER 2011 Glendale, California, Police Department has selected the TeleStaff public safety scheduling and notification solution from Kronos Incorporated. TeleStaff will enable the department to achieve greater efficiencies in scheduling and emergency recall, which will ultimately result in better control of labor costs and minimized compliance risk. “The Glendale Police Department is excited about the TeleStaff selection,” said Glendale Lieutenant Brian Cohen. “We look forward to implementing this technology to help us more efficiently manage the scheduling of our employees and administer staff recall quickly during critical emergencies.” TeleStaff has been utilized by Glendale’s fire department for many years and has proven effective. The Glendale Police Department selected TeleStaff based on the success of the fire department’s use of the product. The police department plans to use TeleStaff to completely automate and standardize the scheduling process for its 400 sworn and civilian personnel while adhering to staffing rules and bargaining agreements. The solution is also intended to enable the department to conduct emergency recall quickly and easily and gain access to analytics to improve decision making– related resource allocation and overtime usage. TeleStaff will integrate with the city’s Oracle PeopleSoft payroll system, which will improve overtime management, enhance personnel accountability, reduce payroll and scheduling errors, expedite the payroll process, and minimize exposure to grievances. With TeleStaff, the department also will be able to eliminate paper-based manual processes and other basic standalone applications it previously relied on to complete officer staffing. TeleStaff will enable officers to automatically respond to or sign up for work opportunities, access a personal calendar to view schedules, and request leave. Managers should benefit from automatic roster generation, backfilling of shifts, and enhanced payroll preparation. The automated, standardized workforce management process is designed to require significantly less time to administer, giving managers more time to focus on higher-value work. Architects Design Group Helps Bring World Trade Center Artifact to the Sarasota, Florida, Police Department The city of Sarasota, Florida, Police Department; Architects Design Group; and hundreds of citizens came together to attend the dedication of a World Trade Center (WTC) memorial on September 11, 2011. The centerpiece of the memorial is a 14.5-foot, 2,500-pound steel beam that is a remnant of Tower 2 from the WTC after the twin towers collapsed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. This is a memorial to the first responders who lost their lives while saving others. A total of 403 police officers and firefighters died while helping others to evacuate. The WTC metal remnant sits on a concrete pedestal in the entry plaza to the Sarasota Police Department. “9/11 will be remembered forever, and the memorial is a symbol for all to see and a vivid reminder of the sacrifices police officers and firefighters make every day,” said Sarasota Police Chief Mikel Hollaway. “May God bless those who protect and serve.” The WTC artifact was donated to the Sarasota Police Department by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Architects Design Group police architecture experts who designed the new six-story, 200,000-square-foot Sarasota police headquarters took the lead in organizing all private sector entities who contributed their services pro bono to make this memorial a reality for the city of Sarasota.
