Home Shopping Goes Global at eRa europe’s 2011 electronic HomeShopping Conference
StOCKHOlM, Sweden – There was a distinct buzz in the air before ERA Europe’s big show earlier this summer. For many, it was the excitement of taking the Electronic HomeShopping Conference and Trade Expo on the road after several years in Monte Carlo, first to Stockholm this year and next to Berlin in 2012. But from the perspective of organizers, much of the excitement stemmed from the numbers leading up to the show: It garnered the highest ever percentage of visitors from the U.S. and more visitors from more international markets than ever before, and it had the highest ever representation of sponsors and exhibitors – not to mention the Business Club sold out of tables about a month before the show even started. Some speculated it was a vaguely romantic anticipation of the oh-soshort Swedish summer nights – only three hours of rich, ERA-blue colored darkness, but one thing is sure: This was the largest ever attendance for an ERA Europe conference, with more than 350 delegates. Long before Mattias Epp of GuthyRenker and John Mills, chairman of ERA Europe and founder of JML, addressed the attendees in the packed Expo Hall at the Opening Cocktail Reception, business had begun, setting a level of eager activity that continued non-stop for the next few days. Everything happened in one place within the confines of the show area; almost no business was carried out in the hotel bar, and there was a telling lack of the “freeloaders” who have blighted so many shows in the past. The Monday Night Networking event, a cruise on a historic boat out to an island in the famous archipelago for a delicious sit-down barbecue, saw a group of 200 delegates socializing and networking together en masse. One struggles to remember a warmer, more relaxed networking event or trade show in general, for that matter. Conference Director Nancy Barkan summed it up: “As someone once said to me ‘whenever we communicate effectively, there is an exchange of energy.’ And for me, the Electronic HomeShopping Conference was all about positive energy. Positive energy from more than 350 registered delegates from 41 different countries who feel proud to be part of ERA and proud to belong to an industry that is credible and viable.” The ERA Europe team had worked tirelessly to ensure that as much content as possible would be included in the show pass. Barkan explained the reason for doing this and the benefits it brought. “This felt like a place where the cowboys are no longer tolerated. ERA Stockholm finally felt like a place where honesty and integrity within the industry was rewarded,” she said. “For me, the most significant conversation was with a person who registered on-site after many years of attending and not paying for registration. I asked her why she finally decided to register, and she said, ‘It just doesn’t make sense not to register, no one is in the bar, no one wants to do business in the bar – the action is up here in the exhibition and Business Club area!’ ” With speakers and senior level delegates from the major global home shopping players, including QVC in the UK, Germany and Italy, back in the association after a brief absence; key representatives from massive overseas markets, including India and the Middle East; and the key suppliers to the industry, it felt like every part of the industry was represented in its best form. Aside from the fevered anticipation for next year’s conference in Berlin, much chatter and conjecture surrounded the still-to-be decided venue for 2013.
