sites and smart mobile devices. In the direct response world, fragmentation isn’t just a matter of where an advertiser can expect to find consumer eyeballs. It also has to do with how consumers go about buying a product after seeing it advertised somewhere. In the DR model, media buying is driven by careful tracking of the sales numbers that can be attributed to particular advertisements running in particular places. If buyers call a unique 800 number to place their orders while a TV infomercial is airing at 2 a.m. in San Diego, the tracking mechanisms work extremely well. If buyers wait a couple of days, and then use an internet search

engine to find the product online, the sales attributable to the infomercial are less easy to measure. That kind of back-end fragmentation is happening even faster among U.S. Hispanics than among English speakers, Handley says. Indeed, Hispanics seem to be out in front of all the technological trends that keep marketers awake at night. He points to some findings of a 2010 survey conducted for Google by market-research company OTX MediaCT: • 93 percent of U.S. Hispanics use a cell phone regularly. And of those with cell phones, 45 percent have smartphones, compared with just 34

percent of the general U.S. population. Of Hispanics with smartphones, 40 percent use the devices to compare products and to find retailers. (Threequarters of the calls received by LUE’s call center come from cell phones, Handley says.) • 64 percent of U.S. Hispanic internet users visit video-sharing sites, such as YouTube, vs. 50 percent of the general population. Of Hispanics who visit video-sharing sites, 30 percent watch product reviews and videos related to beauty, fashion and health subjects. • 78 percent of Hispanic internet users have used search engines, such as Google, to look for information about
