As Sam Walton, founder of Wal-Mart, once said, “There is only one boss: the customer. And he can fire everybody in the company from the chairman on down, simply by spending his money somewhere else.” When it comes to running a business, the development of strong customer relations is the key to success. In the past, when the market was filled with a plethora of “Ma and Pa” shops, personalized customer service was the foundation for building a loyal following. In today’s world of mega corporations, businesses assume that the ever-burgeoning use of technology is the ultimate solution. However, when you’re dealing with a customer, there is simply no way to replace the personal touch of individual interaction. Everyone is familiar with the expression, “The customer is always right.” And whether you know it or not, every action you take affects the customer’s perception of your brand, which can translate directly into added or lost revenue opportunities. Excellent and professional customer service is an essential element of this equation. Fern Lee of THOR Associates recently interviewed Jason Levesque, CEO of Argo Marketing Group, and Linda Goldstein, partner and managing director of the Advertising, Marketing and Media Group of Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, to further the direct response industry’s understanding of the customer service field.
