FEATURE FAA Pursues Its Goals Despite Political Upheavals By Bobby Davis, Staff Editor A s FAA lobbyist Ron Book noted in his address to our members in Tallahassee, the State of Florida must find a way to cut about $3 billion out of the budget, after heavy cuts last year as well. National developments, including the new health care reform bill, have an impact on state budgets. The housing market is still weak, and, in April, unemployment in the state hit an all-time high of 12.2% – more than a million people out of work. Florida must craft a balanced budget every year, which preserves the state’s A+ bond rating—thus saving millions in interest payments—but this puts enormous pressure on lawmakers. Yet, the world moves on and apartment owners have things they need from the Legislature, so about 160 members of the Florida Apartment Association went to Tallahassee to plead our case for some help. AAGO and BAAA used buses to bring their large contingents northward, while SWFAA members drove up. SEFAA members flew to Jacksonville, where Ron Grausam and Phillip Pattishall of ARD picked them up and drove them the rest of the way. FCAA members also took the direct route across I-10. We gathered at the Doubletree Inn downtown, within a five-minute walk from the Capitol. Chip Tatum and Jeff Rogo provided an in- depth briefing about how to make the most of legislative appointments and explain our key issues, and handed out useful Legislative Handbooks they created. Rep. Chris Dorworth of Seminole County, FL, addressed our members. He appreciated the chance to speak in front of such a large and interested group. After an hour break for cocktails and, in some cases, to get settled in our rooms, we had dinner. Ron Book opened the proceedings, and then gave way fairly quickly to Senator Mike Haridopolos, incoming Senate President and Rep. Adam Hasner, House Majority Leader. Both were personable, Grant Ogier and Tyler Trainer considering affairs of state in Rep. Workman’s office. BAAA members Mike Davis, Heist, Weisse & Davis; Lisa Geraci, American Pest Control; Robin Bennett, CORT; Markus Gierschner, Valet Waste; and Robert Quesinberry, Haskel Termite and Pest Control. AAGO members Ron Wenzel, Archon Residential; Dana Caudell, Altman Management; Jackie Causey, Creative Signs; Tracy Lesse, Apartment Guide; Liz Caulder, James Barron Law Firm; James Cornell, Invisible Waste Services, and his son, Darren. 8 l MultifamilyFLORIDA l SPRING 2010
