ASSOCIATIONNews Changes in Store for FAA Legislative Days The Florida Apartment Association has built its annual sojourn to Tallahassee to speak directly with legislators into a large and information-packed event. Participants increase every year, and legislators now come to our association and membership for information and fund-raising. We are trying to do more to engage and recognize APAC donors, whose contributions are vitally important in a year in which every seat is open for election, instead of the usual half. Yes, this is the year for redistricting, or reapportionment, of Florida’s legislative districts, which happens every ten years. It is a contentious process, as the two political parties try to make sure their traditional strongholds are protected. As FAA lobbyist Kelly Mallette of Ron Book, P.A. noted, it can result in someone no longer living in a district which he or she represents, or two political allies suddenly forced to run against each other for a seat. The voters have demanded that this process be as non-partisan and sensible as possible in redrawing the electoral map, and it remains to be seen whether this will occur. As a result, the Legislative Session begins two months earlier this year, in January. As a result of this decision, FAA Legislative Days have been moved up. It will take place on February 21-22 and have a new host hotel, the Hotel Duvall. A second hotel, the Aloft, will also house FAA members. Both offer better room rates ($169 and $154, respectively) than last year’s hotel did, and better places for social gatherings. The legislative briefing will be held at the Hotel Duval, as will the APAC Appreciation Event that evening. APAC held the Appreciation Event last for the first time as a breakfast and it went well, but as FAA Vice President of Government Affairs Chip Tatum said with amusement, “We discovered that our members are not morning people, so we’re going to do an evening event this year.” APAC donors will enjoy cocktails and dessert, and will meet with invited legislators. To take part in FAA Legislative Days, please make sure you fill out a registration form with your local or through the FAA website ( Suppliers, don’t be afraid to spread the word to management members during your sales calls. ● 535798_America.indd 1 7/18/11 8:50:17 PM 541851_ET.indd 1 7/22/11 4:54:48 PM 529594_Common.indd 1 5/2/11 9:45:59 PM 552215_Utility.indd 1 MultifamilyFLORIDA l WINTER 2012 l 9 PM 10/13/11 10:59:47
