THE HOUSING INSTITUTE Certified Professional Home Builder: More Than Licensed Builder Everyone appreciates quality when it comes to making choices on what to wear, eat and purchase. This same expectation goes for choosing a home builder. Many consumers believe just because a builder is licensed, they are getting quality work, but that is not always the case. Licensing is what is required by the state, which, in most cases, is the bare minimum. However, Certified Professional Home Builders (CPHBs) go beyond what the licensing law requires. This level of professionalism always puts CPHBs at the top of the building industry. CPHBs truly show “the Mark of a Professional.” Certified Professional Home Builder Education Code Certification References Local homebuilders association membership Insurance Warranty Experience Building Volume 16 continuing education hours annually ICC Residential Building Contractor C exam or its equivalent 1 financial institution, 5 home owners, 3 trade contractors, 3 suppliers, 2 CPHBs Required $500,00 of General Liability, Builder’s Risk AND Workers’ Compensation as required by law A CPHB program-approved warranty Builder Licensing May require up to 3 continuing education hours annually Not all licensees will take test May be grandfathered in 1 financial institution Not required $300,000 if General Liability and Workers’ Compensation as required by law Not as of April 2008 2 years residential construction experience Successfully completing 2 residential projects during the 2 years preceding application for license Not required Not required Not required Possible disciplinary action by by the Licensing Board Every other year 3 years residential construction experience 5 residential/remodel permits or contracted or closed residential transactions of at least $750,000 during the past 12 months preceding application for license MUST allow a qualified inspector to conduct a fair inspection MUST offer arbitration to home buyers CANNOT have negative BBB rating CPHB has a process to assist with informal resolution of disputes that arise between members and home buyers.
