In July 2005, legislation creating the State Licensing Board for Residential and General Contractors (Board) was signed into law. At the end of 2005, Board members who oversee the development and implementation of licensing were appointed, and since January 2006, HBA and Housing Institute staff have offered a variety of classes and seminars help assist members through the licensing process. Effective July 1, 2008, Georgia law requires ALL residential and general contractors to be licensed to receive building permits. That means that if you haven’t had your license approved by the state and/or passed the licensing exam as of June 30, you are at great risk of delaying your project until you are licensed. Eligibility for licensure is determined by the Board, and anyone wishing to be licensed must submit a licensing application, have the application approved and then pass a licensing examination. If you haven’t started the application process yet, the first step is to visit the Secretary of State’s Web site at contractors. Be sure to read the frequently asked questions and review the different license types and exam information. If you have extensive questions, the HBA offers monthly workshops to help you complete the application and gather all its required supporting documents. The HBA also offers several classes each month to help with exam preparation. Visit www. to register for all upcoming licensing events, as well as for frequently updated information on the licensing process. Guided by an advisory committee of long-time builder members, the Sales and Marketing Council and HBA staff have launched a new newsletter and Web site to educate sales agents and the home buying public on the strengths of Atlanta’s housing market. will provide solid economic data and information from third-party experts that consumers can use to educate themselves on the many reasons why buying a home is a good decision and an even better investment. The newsletter, which complements the Web site, features ready-to-use fliers and other tools that sales teams can use to answer potential buyers’ questions and overcome their perceptions that the market will continue to get worse before it gets better. The first issue of the newsletter was sent to builders and sales agents on May 14, and future issues will be distributed monthly. The Web site is currently being developed and should be live by mid-June. Be sure to take a look and give the committee your feedback. Both have been designed with ultimate goal of educating the Atlanta area on all the reasons why now—and all the time—is a great time to buy a home.
