Interview Day One of the many memorable experiences in my life occurred ccurred while I was employed as the HR Manager for a small prairies branch of a national systems integration company. It was the early 90’s and 0’s times were fabulous. In spite of ourselves, the economy dictated such an upward swing in our success that we literally could not hire enough people to meet demand. It was interview day. After seating the candidate in an interview nterview room, I placed a glass of water on the table in front of him. While I m. have relatively little memory of the interview itself, I know there was one glass of water on the table and I was the only one at the table table l wearing lipstick. When I picked up the glass to clear the room, it e i had distinct lipstick marks on it. Apparently, while the candidate was didate s answering my very stimulating questions, I picked up his water glass and drank from it! I am convinced that to this day he thinks it was inks some strange psychological test I was conducting. To sign or not to sign? A manager is getting ready to serve layoff notice to a number of employees at a remote location. From afar, he calls and leaves a voice message for his HR professional. And the story goes like this “I got your email about returning copies of the layoff letters with a signature. I wasn’t sure from your message if I should be signing the letters or should I get the employees (that are being terminated) to sign? If so, there isn’t a space that I can see that they should sign! Can you please confirm?” 48 O NETWORK O Spring 2010
