association news HRIA Conference Chair’s Message By David Knudson Another Year of Record Attendance! crowd at the fourth annual Alberta HR Conference in April in Edmonton. We welcomed more than 1,000 attendees, exceeding our target. The continued demand for this event – even in the midst of economic uncertainty – clearly demonstrates we are providing exceptional value to the HR industry in Alberta. What a fantastic It was easy going green After the success of our eco-friendly initiatives in 2008, the HRIA wanted to keep the spirit of environmental responsibility a top priority in this year’s conference planning. We did everything we could to make it easy for delegates to reduce the footprint they left behind in Edmonton. Delegates got their first taste of our green meeting initiatives as soon as they registered. Bags were made with 25 percent recycled material and could be reused as a shopping bag. USB flash drives were provided to transport files digitally instead of printing. Water bottles were provided for each delegate to refill at water stations. More than 1,000 kg of waste – paper, cardboard, plastic shrink wrap, compostable paper towels and kitchen waste – was diverted from the landfill. Compare that to the 409 kg of non-recyclable garbage that was collected during the event, and that translates into a hugely positive impact. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this worthwhile effort! Kudos to HRIA staff members Sarah Barton, Jenny Chapman and Ona Stanton, who so efficiently managed the complex planning and logistics. Thanks to Monique Chenier, APR, and her team at Fuse Creative Communications, who managed the conference marketing. A well-deserved round of applause to all the volunteers, staff, sponsors, exhibitors, speakers and delegates – it is all of us together that make this a truly valuable event. Mark your calendar for Think Up 2010 The conference committee has already begun planning for “Think Up: ideas + strategies = RESULTS” at the Calgary Stampede Roundup Centre on April 21 and 22, 2010. Many positive changes are being planned, including a 1-1/2 day tradeshow exhibition. The Call for Speakers will open on Sept. 1, 2009 and the Call for Exhibitors will open on Oct. 15, 2009.
