SPECIAL FOCUS ON UNITED ARAB EMIRATES New York University Abu Dhabi and the Research University as a Global Network By Mariët Westermann THE UNITED ARAB Emirates has always recognized the central importance of education to a flourishing society and economy, thanks to the historic leadership of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. In the past few years, the Emirates have launched significant further initiatives to develop worldclass university education and research, inviting institutions from other countries with strong track records to contribute to the nation’s development. In partnership with the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, New York University Abu Dhabi hopes to advance these goals by establishing a comprehensive liberal arts and science college with the research and creative power of a major research university. The new campus will offer New York University degrees and cutting-edge research programs in permanent connection to NYU’s campus in New York and to its study and research sites on five continents. NYU’s agreement with the Emirate of Abu Dhabi to create NYU Abu Dhabi is the outcome of a shared understanding of the essential roles and challenges of higher education in the 21st Century: a common belief in the value of a liberal arts and science education, concurrence on the benefits a research university brings to the society that sustains it, a conviction that interaction with new ideas is valuable and necessary, and a commitment to educating students to be citizens of the world, prepared to lead at home and contribute to global trade, politics, and culture. The partners agree that liberal arts education fosters productive citizenship through the associational life of students and faculty on a residential campus, and by rigorous and creative academic programs. NYU Abu Dhabi will be a university built on these principles. The campus will be home to a selective liberal arts college and distinctive graduate programs, covering the full range of disciplines. The university’s research capacity will be driven by the NYU Abu Dhabi Institute, a center for advanced research, scholarship, and creativity. The college, graduate programs, and NYU Abu Dhabi Institute will be integrated with each other and connected to NYU in New York. A faculty resident in Abu Dhabi will be complemented by affiliated faculty from NYU in New York, who will spend semesters teachat NYU’s campus in New York or at one of NYU’s ten study abroad sites; conversely, NYU Abu Dhabi will welcome NYU students from New York to study for a semes- Together, NYU’s campus in New York and NYU Abu Dhabi will form the backbone of a unique Global Network University. ing and conducting major research on the campus. Together, NYU’s campus in New York and NYU Abu Dhabi will form the backbone of a unique Global Network University, in which faculty from New York and Abu Dhabi will be encouraged to spend time teaching or conducting research at the other sites in the network. Students from NYU Abu Dhabi will be eligible to spend a semester or more ter on its campus. NYU’s locations will offer courses characteristic of the broad education offered on the New York campus, and also feature programs that tap the specific cultural resources of the region. The network sites will be linked through technological infrastructure that will give all members of the NYU community access to the same electronic library and research resources and create opportunities for joint seminars.
