IIE PROGRAM PROFILE IIE Supports Access to Higher Education throughout Asia By Michele G. Gilfillan 225 organizations and individuals sponsored by the Ford Foundation to perform study or research in India. IIE’s office in New Delhi is coordinating the visit of IIE’s Higher Education Lenders delegation and working closely with IIE’s Center for International Partnerships to identify the Indian university partners for the International Academic Partnership Project, funded by FIPSE. This past year, IIE’s India office also coordinated a conference, the Education Without Borders South Asian Forum, that attracted the most innovate students and leaders in the business, technology, education and humanitarian sectors to discuss the globalization of education in the region. IIE Partners with IIEF in Indonesia For more than 20 years, IIE has worked in collaboration with its affiliate the Indonesian International Education Foundation (IIEF) to administer higher education scholarship programs for in-country and overseas study, as well as short-term training programs for professionals and scholars. As an Indonesian organization, IIEF works closely with the Indonesian government to promote Indonesian education and international exchange. Within a period of more than 20 years, IIEF has managed more than 30 scholarship programs for organizations such as the Ford Foundation, ExxonMobil, NYU Abu Dhabi, and the Freeman Foundation. IIEF has administered tests such as the GRE, TOEFL ITP and SAT for more than 80,000 individuals in the region over the past twenty years and also administers national licensing exams that issue legal and financial certifications in collaboration with well respected organizations in Indonesia. IIE in Thailand IIE’s office in Bangkok opened in 1962 and manages many active scholarship programs for corporations, foundations, and international institutions, reaching about 3,000 potential applications through outreach in the region. The office serves as the regional hub for outreach for the KAUST Discovery Scholarships and administers promotional and recruitment activities for NYU Abu Dhabi scholarship program, in addition to hosting an EducationUSA center. To complement advising services, the office administers the TOEFL exam and other English language assessment tests on behalf of the Educational Testing Service. IIE in Vietnam IIE has been working in Vietnam since 1997. In addition to the highly successful Fall and Spring Higher Education Fairs throughout the country, the office manages outreach, recruitment and selection for scholarship programs for sponsors including the GE Foundation and Sumitomi Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC). The office works closely with the Educational Testing Service on the ITP TOEFL, SAT and GRE programs in the country, as well as provides services to assist the development of partnerships between U.S. and Vietnamese institutions of higher education. ■ Michele G. IIE in China IIE’s office in Beijing assists with the implementation of the U.S. Department of State’s Fulbright Program, bringing over 40 U.S. graduate students and scholars to China each year to study and conduct research. IIE Beijing is also responsible for recruitment and selection of Chinese participants in the Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program (IFP), which offers graduate study scholarships to leaders who work for social change and a number of foundation-sponsored programs. IIE’s office in Hong Kong, founded in 1967, serves as an EducationUSA advising center and coordinates the annual U.S. Higher Education fairs in China and key cities across Asia. With support from the Hong Kong-based Dragon Foundation since 2004, IIE has hosted delegations of 30 Hong Kong undergraduates who participate in an annual week-long series of conferences and lectures regarding global citizenship, held most recently in Bangkok. IIE also manages scholarship and leadership programs for the Avery Dennison, GE and Lingnan foundations, the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship program and others.
