Q&A Randy Jetrader: Boeing has been a big supporter of ISTAT over the years. What makes ISTAT so important for Boeing? Randy Tinseth: ISTAT is an organization that is all about people and what they do. We have financiers, aircraft traders, appraisers, airlines, leasing companies, the list goes on, and each are important constituencies to us at Boeing. The thing I like so much about coming [to the ISTAT conferences] is to engage with these people and get their insight about what’s going on in the market. Even though I come here to talk about the market, I think I walk away learning as much from all the people in ISTAT as I do sitting in Seattle at my desk putting together charts. J: You have been a pioneering corporate blogger with the Boeing online blog “Randy’s Journal,” which you started in 2005 (www.boeingblogs.com/randy). How does the blog help you achieve your mission, and do you blog anywhere else? RT: My blog, I think, is the only external blog that we have at BCA. When I entered this job, part of the assignment was to take over the blog, and I was very concerned because I’d never done such a thing; this is my first journey into blogging and social media, and it’s been eye opening for me. It’s eye opening in terms of all the people it reaches and in what people find interesting. We’ve 8 The official publication of the International Society of Transport Aircraft Trading written blogs before that I’ve thought, ‘oh, we’re going to get hundreds of comments ’ Nothing. You write something small on something you think isn’t that important, and you get 10, 20, 30, 50, hundreds of comments, so it’s always surprising in that way, and it’s been a much greater success than I could have imagined. It’s opened my eyes to view our industry a little differently, as well. It’s not just about the people at ISTAT; we have reporters read it; we have bankers read it; we have the traveling public read it; we have Boeing employees read it. Since I started the blog, we’re at about three million visitors, and most of those are quality visitors, which is important to me. J: Do you believe a new 737NG “2.0 version” with new technology engines can make a sufficient enough design leap to satisfy the 15-20 percent better operating cost demanded by airlines? RT: Our customers have been very specific; they want a 15-20 percent improvement in fuel burn, they want a 25-30 percent improvement in maintenance costs; they want doubledigit improvements of total operating costs; they want an airplane that’s probably a bit wider and more comfortable; and, of course, they want it at a lower price. This is quite a challenge, especially when you consider how efficient today’s 737 is, and our competitor’s
