2011 ISTAT Award Recipient

David Neeleman Founder and CEO, Azul Brazilian Airlines

“The guy who is flying from Cuiaba to João Pessoa could care less about the global reach of a conglomerate. He wants to be able to fly there instead of going on the bus.”

ISTAT is proud to announce that David Neeleman is the recipient of the prestigious ISTAT Award, presented each year at the ISTAT Annual Conference. An entrepreneur in the aviation industry, Neeleman is the founder of four airlines, including JetBlue, where he served as the CEO until 2008. Since then, he has returned to his birthplace of Brazil to found Azul Brazilian Airlines, a domestic low-cost airline based in Barueri, Sao Paulo. Jetrader spoke with David Neeleman from his ofﬁce in Darien, Connecticut, after his morning ﬂight in from Brazil. Jetrader: What sparked your interest in aviation and how did you create a career from this interest? David Neeleman: I’d like to say that I dreamed as a little boy to be in the airline business, but I didn’t. When I was in college, I stumbled into it and found an industry that was really in need of innovation, change and efﬁciency. It was something I just started in, and I’ve been stuck in ever since.
