ISTAT Members Fly to Honor “Sully” Commemorative flight took place on only surviving DC-7B By Roland Moore, Aviation Attorney and former ISTAT Foundation Chairman and Trustee Several ISTAT members had the privilege of flying from Miami to Charlotte on 18 November 2011, on board an Eastern Air Lines DC-7B flight honoring Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger and First Officer Jeffrey Skiles. This flight, sponsored by the Historical Flight Foundation, commemorated their return to Charlotte and their successful and amazing landing on the freezing cold waters of the Hudson River on 15 January 2009. US Airways Flight 1549 had just taken off from New York’s LaGuardia Airport when the aircraft struck birds, permanently damaging both engines and forcing an emergency landing on the Hudson River.
