By Srileka Venkatesan, City University London ISTAT Foundation Scholarship Recipient Aviation has always been a part of my being. Right from high school, the ﬁeld of aerospace most interested me, and I was certain that aviation was the way forward. It was tough to ﬁnd the right balance between my full-time job at the airport and my full-time education—Aerospace Engineering, but I enjoyed it as I was pursuing my dreams. After completing my course and additionally equipped with aviation operational experience, I applied for my MSc in Aircraft Maintenance Management with City University London. I was at crossroads again, as I now had to manage the full-time work with even more complex study material. Although it never failed to excite me, the ﬁnancial strains were steadily growing. It was a letter from ISTAT Foundation’s honorable Roland Moore, with regards to a scholarship application that I had applied for, that changed my life. My academic achievements and my professional goals were appreciated, and I was motivated to work harder. The entire ISTAT Foundation Scholarship team was very kind and generous in granting me with the scholarship for my course. I will forever remain grateful towards them. Further still, they invited me to attend the ISTAT 27th Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida. Special thanks to Roland Moore, Chris Partridge, Frank Visconti, Vito LaForgia, Dana Henninger and all involved in providing with all their help and guidance from attaining a visit visa to the U.S. to safe travel and comfortable accommodations. My time at the conference is a memory I will forever cherish. Having been given the opportunity of sharing space with so many pioneers and leaders of the aviation industry under the same roof, at this stage of my professional and academic stage, was a dream come true. Their presentations provided insights about the current situation in the industry and a very analytical forecast of the years to come. I learned a lot about the aviation aircraft leasing industry, operations and maintenance. I also got to learn a lot about ISTAT AirLink, and I hope that someday I would also be in a position to contribute, as I strongly believe in their vision to use aviation to facilitate help. The President’s Gala dinner was most certainly an evening to remember. I was given the opportunity to be seated with ISTAT Foundation’s pioneers—Mr. and Mrs. Roland Moore, Mrs. Diane Metcalf, Mr. and Mrs. Vito La Forgia and Mr. and Mrs. David Sutton. Additionally, the privilege of listening to a very heartfelt speech by Mr. Gilbert Speed was amazing. When I was ﬁrst invited to attend the conference I was told my Roland Moore that “it is going to be an opportunity of a lifetime,” and it turned out to be exactly that and more; it turned out to be a dream come true. I will forever cherish this chapter of my life. Thank You ISTAT Foundation.

continued from page 29 award went to Matthew Ray of Ascent Aviation who won the $2,500 for landing just 3 inches from the pin. Hats off to Robert Conrad and John Willingham for donating their winnings back to the Foundation. I would be remiss if I did not mention the continued success of the ISTAT AirLink program. The outreach to aid those in Haiti has taken the main stage thanks to the dedication of Bob Brown and Roland Moore. I would also like to welcome Ty Prettyman who has just joined as the AirLink Program Director. Thanks also to Barry Humphreys for volunteering his leadership as our AirLink Executive Director. ISTAT has ﬂown more than 15 missions bringing in food, medicine and supplies to those faced with devastation in Haiti. As you may have seen from a recent Foundation AirLink e-mail, we received a most generous offer from the Batchelor Foundation—they will match dollar-for-dollar any contributions we raise to help us hit $300,000 for Haiti Relief.
