Q&A Chief Operating Officer J The A380 takes off Airbus John Leahy etrader: As a frequent business flyer, where do you see a big need for drastic improvement to make your personal air travel more enjoyable and efficient? John Leahy: Space! To make personal travel more enjoyable and efficient there is nothing more key than space, and that is not only for the business traveler; the critical area for choosing a cross section is in economy class. That also provides the additional space in the premium classes. For example, people change plans to be able to fly on the A380. Airbus has always been setting new standards comfort, and the A380 is doing that again. Interview conducted by Marco Sterk, The Longbow Group, LLC J: Both Airbus and Boeing will face increased competition from Chinese- and Russian-made jetliners in the near future. Whom do you believe will emerge the strongest and become the new third-largest manufacturer, and what is your view on trying to keep good business relationships with these countries to sell more airplanes while at the same time avoiding the risk of transferring key competitive technology? JL: Airbus was founded 40 years ago, and basically when I came over here as commercial director we had 18 percent of the market. We’d already been around a long time. It takes a lot longer than most people think to become a major aircraft manufacturer. I don’t think that Boeing or Airbus will have very serious competition from a full-line producer for another 20 years. It will eventually happen, but I think it’s 20 years out. J: With regards to the transfer of key competitive technology, you’re now producing A320s in the Chinese market JL: Yes, we are, and I think that is the model going forward. Everybody likes to have aircraft manufacturing because it provides high-tech, good-paying jobs, but you can also have an aircraft manufacturing industry by creating joint ventures. The model that the Japanese have developed with Boeing is a good model. You don’t have to say, ‘I’m going to build the whole airplane myself, design it, build it, sell it, service, support it.’ It can be in joint ventures and risk-sharing partnerships with national aerospace component manufacturers that can create a lot of high technology jobs in design and manufacturing.
