Jetrader is a bi-monthly publication of the International Society of Transport Aircraft Trading (ISTAT). ISTAT was founded in 1983 to act as a forum and to promote improved communications among those involved in aviation and supporting industries, who operate, manufacture, maintain, sell, purchase, finance, lease, appraise, insure or otherwise engage in activities related to transport category aircraft. Joe Ozimek, President International Society of Transport Aircraft Trading

Dear ISTAT colleagues, It’s been an interesting and exciting half year so far in 2011 for the industry and ISTAT as our commercial aviation community again gathers for one of its annual highlights—the International Air Show, this year in Paris. Even for seasoned show veterans like me, Paris and Farnborough still elicit excitement as I anticipate hearing about key industry developments and having the opportunity to connect with customers and colleagues from around the world. It’s exhilarating and exhausting. Our ISTAT reception that opens the air show week is a personal favorite. I know that others feel the same way as we hear early on from members wanting to know the reception’s date so they can plan other air show events accordingly. As far as issues, there’s plenty to talk about, including where oil prices are headed and what that means for us, product strategy and new competitors in the large commercial transport market, aircraft values as the market improves, and new global export credit terms, just to name a few. Fortunately our industry is managing its way through 2011 very well, and that includes ISTAT as an organization. At this writing, we have more than 2,020 members; we gained close to 200 from March 2010 to March 2011 and saw more than 100 signups from spring conference attendees alone. Since 2007, we’ve seen on average a nine percent membership increase each year. North America remains our biggest member base (58 percent) followed by Europe (35 percent), Asia (four percent) and elsewhere (three percent). Speaking of distances far from Paris, ISTAT’s 1st China Conference held in May in Beijing was a very successful introduction of our brand in that region. Attendance reached close to 240, and there were panelists and presentations from several Chinese companies and the CAAC, which made for some good interchanges between our Asian industry colleagues and those of us from the West. For those of you experienced in air show attendance, you’ve no doubt learned that preparation is key to making the most of the opportunity. I’m glad that we had the occasion of the ISTAT Annual Conference in Scottsdale in March (the “U.S. Air Show” as some like to call it) to warm us up. Best wishes for continued success as 2011 moves along!
