Looking Long-Term at Global Aviation Boeing’s Annual Forecast Considers Current Disruption, Retains Optimism Randy Tinseth, vice president - Marketing, Boeing Commercial Airplanes T he 2009 edition of the Boeing e Current Ma Market Outlook (CMO) is out and offers a continued optioff mistic view of the world airliner marketplace over the next two marketplac decades. It forecasts a $3.2 trillion market for 29,000 new commercial air airplanes through 2028, which is a view slightly reduced from the plane maker’s estimate of 29,400 last year. This 45th edition of the world’s longest-running and highly regarded annual aviation industry analysis arrives in the midst of the deepest and longest-running global recession since the dawn of the jet age. Boeing says the new CMO refl ects the industry’s “extremely dynamic situation” of late and serves as a reminder of aviation’s long-term history of resilience to upturns and downturns. “We’ve weathered a lot of significant market challenges,” said Randy Tinseth, vice president - Marketing, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “But, after each downturn, we’ve seen airline growth rates rise above average with peak traffic levels above those suggested by the long-term trend. That’s why our 2009 forecast sees a future airline fleet large enough to accommodate these peaks in demand and flexible enough for airlines to adjust or relocate capacity to meet changing demand conditions.” Tinseth added that “current” in the report’s title indicates that the company literally tears up the previous year’s 20 The official publication of the International Society of Transport Aircraft Trading
