License to Fly
Breaking physical boundaries with Able Flight
By Bernard W. Wulle Purdue University Department of Aviation Technology’s new program trains people with physical disabilities to ﬂy. This innovative ﬂight training program will break down barriers, both real and perceived, allowing a greater number of young people with physical disabilities to enter aviation. It will make ﬂight training accessible to those who must deal with the effects of a catastrophic injury or illness and will provide pathways for advanced educational and career opportunities within aviation. Under this unique proposal, the Department of Aviation Technology and Able Flight will provide the opportunity for participants to earn an FAA-issued pilot certiﬁcate after an intensive ground and ﬂight training program. The training will be done to the same high standards for which the Department of Aviation Technology is nationally recognized. At the heart of every great institution providing aviation training is top-notch instruction by exceptional faculty members and ﬂight instructors. Purdue University and the Department of Aviation Technology are perfect examples of this. Both have been blessed with an outstanding faculty which has been shaping students’ lives and careers for many years. This training program is designed to serve people with a variety of physical disabilities including spinal cord injuries, disabilities due to the effects of congenital birth defects, loss of limb due to accident, illness or combat wounds. Though we often read anecdotal reports of the challenges faced by people with physical disabilities, when viewed as a whole, the number of people who are disabled is stunning. Able Flight was founded in 2006 in part to take advantage of a new FAA certiﬁcation rule that provides an easier pathway for people with physical disabilities to medically
