Lease Corporation International (LCI) is a privately owned aircraft lessor founded in 2004. Since its inception LCI has acquired aircraft valued at over $3.5 billion. Most recently it has added a new Boeing 777-300ER to its fleet plus eight new Airbus A330-300s with deliveries outstanding for further Airbus aircraft valued at $300 million. LCI has also placed an order valued at around $1.5 billion for 20 new-generation Bombardier CSeries aircraft with options for a further 20. LCI’s customer list includes major airlines and national flag carriers such as Singapore Airlines, Air France, British Airways, SAS and Iberia. The company’s highly experienced management team works closely with airframe and engine manufacturers, and with major financial institutions to provide aircraft leasing solutions for airlines worldwide.

at the highest level, and in an atmosphere of peer support. During this program, Able Flight Scholarship recipients will be trained by Purdue University Aviation Technology flight instructors for certification at the Sport Pilot level. The most recent training took place at Purdue University Airport in specially adapted Light Sport Aircraft during the summer of 2010. Participants lived in adapted university housing and were trained by university flight instructors. Student pilots for the program may come from Purdue University’s current student population, incoming class, Indiana high school juniors and/or seniors, and existing Able Flight scholarship applicants. Heather Schultz and Chris Spaur are the first to receive this scholarship. They may be separated by thousands of miles, and their physical challenges may be very different, but the young woman from New Jersey and the young man from California have a lot in common. Both have a passion for becoming pilots, and both travelled to Purdue this summer to take part in the first Able Flight-Purdue University flight training program. In early June, Heather and Chris arrived in West Lafayette, Indiana, where they trained with Purdue flight instructors while living in an accessible dorm just a few minutes from the university airport. Not only did the two have the opportunity to learn to fly at one of the nation’s premier university aviation programs,

but the partnership allowed the Purdue Department of Aviation Technology to experience training students with physical disabilities and to do so in an adapted Light Sport Aircraft. Heather and Chris learned in a Sky Arrow 600 LSA provided by Philly Sport Pilot, a flight school operated by Able Flight pilot Sean O’Donnell. After five weeks of training, they both successfully completed the course and received their pilot certificates. One of three children in an athletic and adventurous family, Heather was used to the challenges of soccer, softball and skiing when she sustained a C5 spinal cord injury in 2006. Since then, she has faced more than three years of intensive physical therapy, defying the predictions of doctors who told her she wouldn’t walk again. Heather’s training is made possible through her selection as the 2010 recipient of the Jet Aviation Scholarship. Chris is a 19-year-old college freshman, and with just a casual look, you might not notice the effects of muscular dystrophy. He’s one of triplets and shares the condition with a sister. With his scholarship, he’s soon to share something else with several family members. Both Chris’ mother and his uncle are pilots, and though he has dreamed of joining them, up until now that’s all it has been—a dream. Now, thanks to his selection as the recipient of Able Flight’s Bombardier Scholarship for 2010, he will follow in the family tradition and become a pilot.
