Henri Courpron
CEO, International Lease Finance Corporation
Interview conducted by Marco Sterk, The Longbow Group, LLC

Jetrader had the opportunity to speak with International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC) CEO Henri Courpron regarding his experience at the company and ILFC’s strategy for upcoming years. Courpron celebrated his first anniversary with ILFC in May 2011. Jetrader: Since your arrival as the new CEO, what immediate changes have you initiated at ILFC to keep the company competitive and to retain key personnel? Henri Courpron: The issue was never to remain competitive. We enjoy a solid existing business, strong customer relationships, and such an attractive portfolio that being competitive is not an issue. The market for aircraft operating lease business is growing. There is more appetite than ever before from airlines. The priority for last year was to restore confidence and address some of the concerns that had started during the financial crisis of ‘09. The bulk of the focus last year was therefore on liquidity and liability management.

We certainly achieved that, and ILFC received the Airfinance Journal Deal of the Year recently in New York in recognition of the tremendous success of our finance team. The fact that we were able to generate over $14 billion of all sorts of liquidity—selling aircraft, raising secured and unsecured funding—speaks volumes to the credibility of the ILFC team and the ILFC business model. That was the No. 1 priority, and now we can focus on running the business. Retaining key personnel was actually not difficult. ILFC is a great franchise, and if you provide the team with vision, if you provide the team with hope, then when you start winning, it’s not that difficult to keep a team together. Moreover, not only were we able to keep together the team that matters, but we were able to augment the team

with some newcomers from the outside. We are blending newly acquired talent with pre-existing ILFC key players like Fred Cromer and Phil Scruggs. The blend is actually quite remarkable because we are able to leverage the historical strength of ILFC combined with new ways of looking at issues and solutions. The mix is proving to be very powerful. JT: Do you expect ILFC to remain an AIG company in the long term or what, in your view, is best for both ILFC and AIG?
