Latest Boeing outlook pegs $4 trillion aviation market

Commercial aviation’s longest-running and best-respected industry forecast, the annual Current Market Outlook (CMO) from Boeing, has been updated with a significant boost in expected deliveries between 2011 and 2030. Now in its fifth decade, the latest CMO had its debut in Paris prior to this year’s air show. It pegs demand for new commercial aircraft deliveries over the next two decades as a $4 trillion market, up 11 percent from the 2010 edition. That translates into expected orders for 33,500 new commercial passenger airplanes and freighters sized from regional jets through the jumbos. The 2011 CMO was upped by an additional 2,600 planes, on top of 2010’s increase of nearly 2,000 airplanes, primarily from increased demand for singleaisle models like the 737 Next Generation and A320. (See Chart 1, page 35.) Tinseth said that since coming out of the recent economic downturn, Boeing’s analysis has been somewhat conservative, which the aircraft builder has sought to remedy with significant forecast revisions now two years running. “It’s called the ‘current’ market outlook because each year we rip it up and take a new, fresh look. Our aim is to focus on the market’s long-term potential and incorporate our latest thinking,” Tinseth said. However, Tinseth added that there is nothing radically different in this year’s iteration. “There’s a continuing of the strong demand that we’re seeing in the marketplace,” he said. “We try not to get caught up in the day-to-day changes.
