ISTAT foundation
Warren Willits, Chairman ISTAT Foundation students who have a solid understanding of the industry and a willingness to be trained in the specific requirements for your business? You would have a conduit of talent flowing into your operations on an ongoing basis and that talent would ultimately end up being the future management of the company. If only there was a program like that you could tap into! Well guess what, there already is a program established under the ISTAT Foundation that does exactly that! It’s called the ISTAT Internship Program, and its goal is to find young, talented students focused on the aviation industry and interested in pursuing a career path with one of the ISTAT member companies. We match them with a host company that will bring them in for the summer and expose them to all their various business activities. By doing this, 1) the student gains foundational knowledge that he/she can build from and quickly develop into a highly productive member of the team, and 2) the company develops a tool through which they can bring in future talent to meet their needs. It truly is a win-win opportunity that many ISTAT companies can significantly benefit from. The benefit is not only to gain additional headcount during the summer but also to develop a highly productive college graduate who could quickly become a longterm, valued employee. The ISTAT internship program is very flexible and is designed to meet the needs of the ISTAT membership. What this means is that any ISTAT company interested in working with the internship committee can identify specific requirements for candidate students, and the committee will then compare those requirements to the skill sets of the current ISTAT scholarship candidates and recipients. If no matches are met, then the committee will pulse all the various associated aviation/ finance universities around the world to look for students who meet the requirements. Chances are high that there will be a great match among the ISTAT scholarship group who are some of the “best and brightest” currently in aviation and finance programs. It’s something that every ISTAT company (big or small) should seriously consider. You never know, you may be bringing along the next Steve Hazy, Steve Rimmer, Steve Hannahs or Steven Townend (I am starting to see a pattern here!). No matter what, you will be helping a young person looking for a path into the world of aviation finance and trading, and that is a great thing! Just ask previous hosting companies, such as AAR, AEI, Apollo, GECAS, Boeing and Airbus about their experiences with interns, and see what they have to say about the experience. I have a feeling that you will find they have had a great experience, and many are now talking to their former interns about employment. Interns are good for the (ISTAT) soul…and the bottom line! If you are interested in ISTAT Internship Program, please contact either Sonny Stern (the ISTAT Internship Committee Chairman) or Rebecca Holloway at ISTAT headquarters.

Do you remember way back around the end of your second year at college/university, how excited you were about your future career path and the idea that you’re ready to take on anything? You knew you had basic skills, general knowledge and desire that any potential employer might require for an entry-level position, but you had no idea how to get the real-world training required to give you an edge when entering the marketplace. The question was, “How do I get exposure and market knowledge that will help me to determine my career path?” Wouldn’t it have been great if someone had offered you a summer job in the industry of your potential career path, instead of taking that McDonald’s cashier position that you had for the previous two summers? Now let’s fast-forward to today. You are heading up a group within one of the ISTAT member companies and are looking for a way to tap into a pool of young people who are motivated, have desire to learn and ability to bring in fresh, new ideas that could help drive your company for the next 10 to 20 years. Wouldn’t it be great to somehow reach
