While initially it looked like the leasing companies would be the only ones placing orders, later in the week the airlines came back with a vengeance.
was convinced by the announced improvements to the 737 MAX, especially the maximum take-off weight projections, which allow the type to fly 6,500 km, an increase of 1,000 km over the “old” 737NG. GECAS, not to be outdone, countered with an order for 75 of the 737 MAXs plus 25 for the -800NG. Other lessors’ orders included ALAFCO for 20 of the 737 MAX and Avolon also for a mix of 15 of the 737 MAX plus 10 old -800s. Despite the already bulging order book for the A320neo, Avolon added 15 of the A320neos to Leahy’s to-do list, while China Aircraft Leasing joined the party for 26 of the A320neos. Looking at these narrowbody orders, the interest in early neo and MAX aircraft is logical. Why investors are interested in last of the line planes of the current types, is a more interesting question, given the value history of this category of late-production aircraft. CIT went its own way and made headlines by adding five orders for the A330300 widebody, but more importantly, these were for the new 240-ton version. Will this version become known as the XHGW? While not yet launched, Boeing seems determined to produce a stretched version of the 787, in the same category, the 10X. Boeing claims the 787-10X will be an A330-300 killer. Apparently the battle for the widebody market continues. While initially it looked like the leasing companies would be the only ones placing orders, later in the week the airlines came back with a vengeance. Bombardier added another name to the CSeries customer list with an Air Baltic order for 20 of the CS300s. Maybe even more spectacular was SkyWest’s announcement that it has the intention to buy no less than 100 of the advanced PW1200G GTF-powered Mitsubishi MRJ Regional Jets. While some doubted if the MRJ would gain traction in the market outside of Japan, the SkyWest order clearly demonstrated the Japanese high-tech plane should not be discounted. MRJ also stretched the fuselage, not in the form of a MRJ100X but, in the form of a new cabin mock-up with additional seat rows. The mock-up, in its own exhibition hall, showed a business class as well as an economy class interior, including the much-talked-about seats with the unique 3D net fabric. It must be said, the mockup design was very stylish and lends even more credibility to the project. So, a surprise order for the MRJ. Not so much of a surprise was the longanticipated United order for 150 Boeing 737s. The order was split between 100 of the 737 MAX-9s and 50 of the old -900ERs. For Boeing this order means a big step on its way to return to a 50/50 market split between the neo and the MAX, a split that is deemed crucial for the continuation of the stable market equilibrium that we all need so desperately Airbus also enjoyed a breakthrough as Cathay Pacific ordered/converted a total of 26 Rolls-powered Airbus A3501000s. This was an important order for the stretched variant of the A350 family. Synergy/Avianca ordered six A330200 passenger aircraft and added three orders back to the shrinking A330-200F list. Other Airbus successes came from UT Air, MEA and Arkia for mainly A320/321 planes. Hebei saved the show for Embraer with a modest order for five E-190s. Lao Airlines and Air Arann finally ordered a total of 10 ATR-72 turboprops while six more Bombardier Q400s will go to Chorus. While not an order, it was fascinating to note that apparently AirAsia is considering an order for 100 Bombardier CSeries with an unbelievable 160-seat interior. Sounds like a flying school bus, but time will tell. On the engine front, the battle between the Pratt & Whitney GTF and CFMI’s LEAP engine continued with both

The MRJ mock-up showed a business class as well as an economy class interior, including the much-talked-about seats with the unique 3D net fabric.

Farnborough 2012 was still a success, though it seemed not as crowded as previous years.
