Background
The ATR 72 is a stretched development of the ATR 42, which was launched in 1986. The ATR 72 includes three main variants: -200, -500, and -600. The ATR 72-500 was introduced into service in 1997 as a derivative of the ATR 72-200 series and is most commonly powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127F turboprop engines, each generating a maximum of 2,750 SHP. The ATR 72-500 incorporates a number of improvements over its predecessor, including a new cabin interior, increased payload/range, better hot and high field performance, and a higher cruise speed (276 knots maximum). The aircraft shares a high degree of commonality with its smaller sibling, the ATR 42, including cross-crew qualification. With typical single class of 68 passengers, the aircraft has a range of 890 nm at maximum payload.

Current and Future Market Outlook
The ATR 72-500 has enjoyed considerable sales success with 283 aircraft in active service with 55 operators worldwide and a backlog of 78 aircraft. Such success is largely due to its compelling economics in low volume, lower yield short-haul markets less than 350 nm, and in developing countries where runway conditions are restrictive. The largest fleet is based in growth significantly in the Asia Pacific where the aircraft has found success with Bangkok Airways, Cebu Pacific, Jet Airways, Kingfisher, Vietnam Airways, and others. Despite challenging economic conditions, long-term demand seems assured in a high fuel price environment as the world economy recovers. The development of freighter and other multi-role configuration also enhances its competitiveness and longer-term residual values. ATR recently launched the ATR 72-600, a new derivative with upgraded avionics and higher thrust engines, which will supplement the ATR 72-500 and ensure longer-term family viability. Competition stems only from the Bombardier DHC-8-400Q, and as demand increases from regional airlines with a relentless operating cost focus, the outlook is positive for the ATR 72-500.
