association news CAPITOL CLUB AWARDS FIRST PITTS SCHOLARSHIP June 2012 marked the inaugural award of the Joseph R. Pitts Electronic Warfare Scholarship, the Capitol Club’s contribution to encouraging rising scholars to enter and/or further pursue a career in Electronic Warfare or Information Operations. The scholarship is named for Pennsylvania Congressman Joe Pitts, who is the founder of the Congressional EW Working Group. The inaugural scholarship award went to Sgt Michael Kim, USMC, who is assigned to duties at the National Security Agency. Sergeant Kim is currently pursuing a degree in Information Systems Computer Security at Strayer University. His expected graduation is January 2014. Upon completion of his degree, Sergeant Kim is planning to pursue a master’s degree in software engineering and continue his military career in the field of network exploitation/security. His essay focused on the evolution of the electronic warfare discipline to a reliance on wireless communications and computerized command and control. In addition to the $2,500 scholarship, Sergeant Kim received a membership to the Association of Old Crows, and naturally was inducted into the Capitol Club. As a member of the Capitol Club, the chapter was able to bring him to the annual Spring Town Hall meeting at the Army Navy Country Club, where Chapter President Geoff Leighton presented him with a handsome plaque and a more handsome check! Shortly thereafter, Sergeant Kim visited Capitol Hill and meet with Congressman Pitts. They discussed their respective military experience, the challenges of career development in the EW discipline, and the need to cultivate a new generation of leaders to move the discipline forward. The Capitol Club, like many chapters, has had a scholarship initiative for many years. The Community College of the Air Force has been the most frequent beneficiary. Based on feedback from our membership, it has wanted to do more to encourage military personnel to pursue studies in EW and Cyber. At the same time, the chapter wanted to recognize Congressman Pitts, who has been a stalwart supporter of EW throughout his military and professional career. He served five and a half years in the US Air Force, with three tours of duty and 116 combat missions as an EWO in Vietnam. Pitts was also a school teacher prior to becoming a public official in both Pennsylvania and our nation’s capital. In 1999, he established the Congressional EW Working Group, a bi-partisan caucus dedicated to educating government leaders about the importance of EW to military operations. He has dedicated his career to leadership and worked to strengthen The Journal of Electronic Defense | August 2012 U.S. Rep. Joe Pitts meets with Sgt. The $2,500 scholarship will be awarded annually. To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be from the greater Washington, DC metropolitan area or be enrolled in a regional school. Applicants may pursue undergraduate, graduate, post-graduate or professional certificate degrees; however, preference will be given to students pursuing the highest degree to advance their career in EW. The next scholarship round will open in October 2012.
