Spe c ial Mission Airc raf t Have a Long Histor y
I read with keen interest your article on “SIGINT for Special l Mission Aircraft,” July 2010. I worked at Sanders Associates in the early to mid 1980s and we were using Beechcraft B100s and B200s as covert emitter location (EL) platforms – far before any of the programs you mentioned. We only did a few (three I believe) aircraft while I was there, and I believe it was transitioning to an RC-12 program for the military for EL. The program was primarily code-named “Snowball.” I just wanted to provide some information to show we were at the forefront of deploying these aircraft for special missions prior to dates many people think this was taking place.
