IN CELEBRATION OF …
THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
Election Day • November was selected because the harvest work was done. • Tuesday was selected because many people had to travel the day before to reach the polling place. Since most people did not travel on Sunday for religious reasons, they did not want it to be on a Monday. • They did not want Election Day to fall on November 1st because it is All Saints Day. • They did not want Election Day to fall on the fi rst of the month because many shop keepers did their books for the preceding month on the fi rst. • Election Day is the Tuesday on or after November 2nd.
James Buchanan, elected in 1856, is the nation’s only bachelor president to date. In 2008, Barack Obama was elected the nation’s 44th president. However, only 43 individuals have held the office. Grover Cleveland was elected twice to nonconsecutive terms; fi rst as the 22nd president and later as the 24th.
In the 1984 presidential election, Ronald Reagan received both the highest number of popular votes (54,455,075) and the highest number of electoral votes (525) in the history of U.S. presidential elections. These numbers have yet to be surpassed by another presidential candidate. The 2008 presidential election was the fi rst time since the 1928 election that neither the incumbent president nor the incumbent vicepresident ran for election.
