Rural Water - Quarter 1, 2010 - (Page 46)

Editor’s note: This is the seventh in a continuing series of articles by NRWA CEO Rob Johnson about the men and women who have been the founders, creators, “movers and shakers” of NRWA from the beginning. Without them, Rural Water – nationwide – would not be the catalyst or the influential voice of rural America that we have become. BY ROB JOHNSON, NRWA CEO FROM THE CEO Rolly …there is a time to be born and a time to die a time to weep and a time to cry SOMETIMES YOU LEARN more about a man after he passes away than when you knew him. Such was the case for this man. We in our Rural Water family knew him as a former 58-year-old Marine who, when serious, was focused and fearless. At his funeral, when the pastor asked for everyone who had been coached by him to stand up, several acknowledged his contribution to their lives as their basketball, football or wrestling coach. Five years ago, he was named the “Citizen of the Year” in his community and was very active in the Kiwanis Club, Lions Club and the American Legion. We knew that he participated in stock car racing and had owned motorcycles, but when we saw pictures of him racing and his 70s chopper, he seemed very different. Rolly Olney was very active in the Michigan Rural Water Association since the mid-1990s and eventually became its president. In 1999, he was elected to the National Rural Water Association where he served on and chaired several committees. He was well respected by his colleagues and was elected to the executive committee. Some of my most potent memories of Rolly involved his devotion and care of his wife as she was dying of cancer. It was in that episode that he came to faith in God. His dying wife said that all her suffering was worth it for that one act on his part. Rolly participated in the NRWA executive committee meeting the weekend prior to his death and he was his usual good-natured self. At the Saturday evening dinner prior to his passing, we were all giving him advice on impressing his girlfriend, Patti, and he was returning our well-intentioned humor with his own verbal jabs. We had had a great time, and that is how I will always remember Rolly. On the day of his passing, he spoke with NRWA President Fred Sheldon and attended a Michigan Rural Water meeting. He loved Rural Water and was a significant person in our association who was dedicated to hard work and carrying water for people all over this nation. Rolly had good friends all across this nation and we will miss him. ❍ He loved Rural Water and was a significant person in our association who was dedicated to hard work and carrying water for people all over this nation.
